Tissot's origin

In 1853, Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son; Chales-Émile, founded "Charles-Félicien & Son" in Le Locle, Switzerland. Then, the Tissot catalog consisted of a large selection, especially pocket watches in gold and also pendants... with either stunning decorations or with incredibly complicated clockworks. The special quality of Tissot's watches was recognized fairly early, at both national as well as international exhibitions. In the year 1900, during the annual world watch exhibition, the famous French actress: Sarah Bernhardt, bought a Tissot 18 carat gold pendant.

The majority of Tissot's watches were exported to USA and to the Russian empire. Tissot even opened a branch of the business in the Russian empire, because that were their biggest market for many years, in the beginning – and Tissot even found it's way to the Tsar.

Tissot until today

In the beginning of the twentieth century, Charles Tissot built a watchmaking factory in Chemin de Tourelles, in Le Locle, where they still have their head quarters. ”1910ish”, they sold their first Tissot Ladies' watches, coated with gold and ornated with diamonds... and they were followed up with Tissot Men's watches, long before it became a trend – between the two world wars

When Tissot celebrated their 100 year anniversary (1953), it was a turning point for their industrial practice – with Edouard Louis Tissot as the new CEO. He introduced the ”single caliber” principle, which led to an increase in both their manufacturing as well as in how advanced they could make their watches – simplified manufacturing. This resulted in rationalized sales around the world, and helped increase the success and awareness of Tissot.

In the end of ”the quartz crisis” (1983), the big Swiss watchmaking brands merged into what today is known as ”The Swatch Group”. As a result of this union, Tissot reinvented itself... by designing the, at that time, unique and iconic watches: ”the RockWatch”, the first natural stone watch... which was followed by ”The WoodWatch” and ”The PearlWatch”.

Since the 90's, Tissot has been true to their motto: innovators by tradition”, in the forefront of innovative watches; for example the ultra-feminine and sporty ”T-collection” as well as the world's first touchscreen watch: ”T-touch” (in 1999). Also, the world's first touchscreen watch powered by solar energy (T-Touch Expert Solar, in 2014). This innovative spirit is probably also a huge reason for Tissot's continued success, with more than 4 million watches sold, worldwide.
